#africa : By presidential decree dated January 3, 2026, Equatorial Guinea officially transferred its capital from Malabo, located on Bioko Island, to Ciudad de la Paz in Djibloho Province, on the mainland. This project, envisioned since 2008 by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been in power for 47 years, is justified by strategic reasons and a more central geographic location. All government departments and institutions have one year to relocate there.

🔥 The government also justifies this decision by the desire to alleviate congestion in Malabo and Bata, whose rapid urban growth poses challenges, and to strengthen national unity.
